Last Thursday, Ian Nicholson swapped his usual client meetings for a studio seat on Phoenix FM. He joined Michelle Ward on Eat My Brunch to talk about a subject most parents put off far longer than they should. Naming a guardian for young children rarely makes it onto anyone’s to-do list until someone asks the question directly, and Ian spent the segment asking exactly that.

The interview covered ground Ian works through with clients every week at Beaulieu Wills and Estate Planning. If a parent dies without naming a guardian, the decision doesn’t automatically pass to whichever relative the family assumes is the obvious choice. It goes to the courts instead. Ian explained on air that children can end up in temporary foster care while relatives argue over who should raise them, and that process can drag on for months rather than weeks.

Ian pointed out that the person best placed to raise a child isn’t always the person you’d trust to manage money on their behalf, and a Will lets families split those two roles cleanly instead of hoping it works out.
